Calcifer

An exploration in lighting.

Timeframe: 4 weeks
Year: 2022
Skills: Prototyping, Acrylic Fabrication, WoodWorking

An exploration in thermoforming and material experimentation. By heating and shaping plastic sheets over molds, I studied how form and texture interact with light. Multiple diffusion materials were layered and tested to create shifting effects, aiming to translate motion into a static object.

Prompt: Create a wall sconce that embraces the unique properties of light.

How might a lamp emphasize the play between light and dark?

Light Tests were conducted using a variety of materials.

Paper was cut to create patterns of light.

A sheet of frosted acrylic was heated in an oven and formed around a PVC pipe with a 6" diameter.

Takeaways

- Experimenting with light as a material that can be controlled.

- Used desired final diffusion material in testing to ensure a consistent final result.

- Learned the fundamentals of thermoforming and applied them directly to the final design.
